Meet John Adcock.

This week's guest VRC Member Tipster.

How long have you been a member of the VRC?

I have been a member for close to 1 year now.

What, or who got you into horseracing?

Could probably say it’s in the genetics. I grew up around horses and racing, my grandfather and father worked as all-round horsemen, mostly in farrier/breaker/barrier attendant fields. Both were strongly involved in harness racing but my father later migrated to thoroughbred training around the Mildura area where I grew up.

Do you own or have a share in any racehorses?

Yes, I own 2 broodmares and have bred some horses. I have an un-named 2 yo filly at the breakers now, and I also own a yearling filly and have another foal due later this year.

Have you had a memorable win on a horse that you can share with us?

Had a very memorable 2014 Stakes Day win on Terravista in the Darley Classic Sprint. Chautauqua was the hot favorite but remember how my old man had told me to keep following Terravista after his previous start. I also tipped him to plenty of mates and followed it up backing Suavito for a very profitable day.

Who would you say is your favourite racehorse over the years?

It's hard to narrow down but I couldn’t go past the great Makybe Diva. To be able to take on the handicapper and keep winning those Melbourne cups as well as our top wfa races over such a wide distance range was a courageous effort and a throwback to the star horses of yesteryear. Winx and Black Caviar were obviously outstanding talents but were also very well managed to maintain their win streaks, which I can understand and respect. But both were incredible mares who could run ridiculously fast sectionals when needed. I also loved Takeover Target and the story behind him.

Do you have a jockey/trainer that you always follow on a race day?

Follow Preusker a bit, his team does a great job with their horses. I always have respect for the Maher stable and really like the sports science they are incorporating with their training. The Snowden stable also deserves a mention as one I follow a bit. In the jockey ranks I followed Vlad Duric strongly back when he was in Victoria. Zac Purton always seems to give his rides a great steer wherever he is riding. Lane and Kah both standout as jockeys gifted with a great connection with and natural feel for the horses they ride. As tactical race riders Williams and Shinn are hard to go past, but overall the depth of jockeys is really good nowadays. I think they can all ride very well in all areas and there isn’t a huge difference between plenty of them, some just get more opportunities on better horses.

What would be your favourite memory at Flemington?

Probably attending Derby Day in 2016. Derby day is always such an outstanding race day and I have been lucky enough to attend quite a few, but managed to have a great day on the punt that year which helps it stand out a bit more.

Will you be on track this Saturday at Flemington?

Yes, I will be trackside.

Do you have a Best Bet of the Day?
